Low mileage .. take two
by michaell on Wed Nov 12 13:11:09 PST 2008
I suspect I may be in GG's shoes here in the not too distant future. My mother-in-law's husband passed away last month and left a couple of vehicles behind that she wants to sell. The first is a '49 Willys-Overland Jeepster - I've been keeping folks updated in the "Project Cars" thread. The other vehicle is a '97 Grand Cherokee Limited. 5.2L V8. White with gray leather interior. Custom 10-disk CD changer. MIL doesn't really need it (she's got a '98 Eldorado that is hers), so she's thinking of selling it next month. They live in Cheyenne, WY and so they don't drive very much. I was talking with her earlier today and was asking her how many miles it had on it. I was figuring about 5K per year for a total of 50K miles. Her answer - 28,000 miles! Still has the original tires, which in my opinion need to be replaced. I know all the maintenance has been done on it - I'm sure there is a file folder somewhere that has it all organized in chronological order. Edmunds prices it (private party) at $4300. However, here in the mountain west, SUV's still bring decent money, so I was thinking that it could be listed at $6995. Thoughts?

Draft ad - Jeepster

Here is my first draft; edit away: 1949 Willys-Overland Jeepster – $5000 This vehicle belonged to my wife’s step-father. He bought it a year ago with the intention of restoring and driving it. Unfortunately, he became too ill and passed away before completing the project and now my mother-in-law is selling it. The vehicle has the 134 cubic inch inline 4 cylinder engine and a 3-speed manual transmission. Less than 3000 of these vehicles were built for the model year 1949. Work that he has had done to it: • Major tuneup including new spark plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor and distributor • Full brake overhaul including new brake lines, front and rear brake shoes (drum brakes all around), all the brake cylinders as well as the master cylinder • New battery, fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel tank • All 4 wheel bearings Vehicle runs good and the body is in decent shape. The vehicle is located in Cheyenne, WY though I am fielding all calls to answer questions. Call Michael at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

Let me give you a little education, the automobile and the furniture industry has always been when leather is used to used genuine leather only on the surfaces that touch your body, the rest is high grade vinyl. It is the standard of both industries, I know because I spent 45 years in the furniture Mfg business and have always know that this is the wy it's done. Sorry to dissoluion you.

"Regular" gas at a Shell station in Estes Park, CO was 85 octane. "Regular" gas at an EXXON in Cody, WY was 85.5 octane. same for Casper, WY, Jackson, WY, Grant Village at Yellowstone, and Ft Collins, CO. There's plenty of places in the U.S. of A. where gas is less than 87 octane.
50mpg breakthrough
by dephinusorca on Sun Aug 31 00:13:21 PDT 2008
First, I've been bad about reporting for quite a while because I've been busy with vacation, moving, and etc. But I've a lot to report. After never having a 50 mpg tank before (think I topped out at 48.7) I had four within the space of a month, and three consecutively. Since mid July my last tanks have been: 44.6, 51.7, 44, 44.9, 45.3, 50.4, 53.7, 52.6, and 46.4. The first 50mpg (51.7) tank came on 90% steady 60mph driving long trip. The second 50mpg tank (50.4) was faster (ave. 70mph or so) but was nonstop driving from northern to southern Montana, 388 miles in one run. The next two amazed me: 53.7 and 52.6 mpg. How possible? They were entirely within the confines of Yellowstone and Grand Tetons national parks, with 45mph top speeds. Lots of driving, but lots of stops too. This really shows the amazing numbers possible driving 40 in fourth, 45 in fifth, never accelerating rapidly. The final tank of my vacation I hoped to drive all 80mph on my way home (through MT speed limit is 75) to try to nail down the effect of speed on mpg. I averaged 80mph for @300 miles, but for 150 or so miles more like 65mph. End result was 46.4mpg. What are my conclusions? Nothing surprising: (1) speed matters--60mph gets great mileage but even slower is still more efficient (2) length of trip matters--short is bad, long is good, really long is even better (3) This car is awesome--I drove well over 3000 miles on this roadtrip and gas prices were the least of my concerns (especially when I realized every other vehicle in MT and WY is some Dodge dually pickup that costs $150 to fill up).
