Re: 2009 328ci SULEV Fuel Pump [shipo]
by teebone1958 on Tue Nov 18 07:01:50 PST 2008
The key point is that the SULEV engines have the fuel pump\filter SEALED in the gas tank. I have no problem with the pump being in the tank, the problem I have is that it is non serviceable w\o replacing the entire tank. The SULEV engines are shipped and sold in NY, CA, VT, MA, and ME. This engine setup includes a fuel pump and filter which are sealed into the gas tank which makes them unserviceable without the replacement of the $7995 dollar gas tank. I beleive that this is a horrible design which becomes the problem of the consumer. If you beleive this is a good design, I will have to respectfully disagree. In essence, I do not want to own a car which has a single mechanical point of failure which can cause a 8000 dollar repair (w\o labor). As otherwise, I like the car (and the BMW make), I want to make sure the next car I buy does not have such a bad design (to be clear, I am ok with the pump\filter in the tank as long as it can be replaced if it goes (as they do sometimes especially with the introduction of ethanol in the fuel). Therefore I have two questions: 1. Does anyone know if the 2008 or 2009 SULEV engines have a non serviceable fuel pump\filter? 2. Does a dealership in a SULEV state have to sell the SULEV engine only (or can they sell a non SULEV engine? From what I understand, the non SULEV engine does not have the pump\filter SEALED into the gas tank. In other words it is replaceable. Also, I do not beleive in 'lifetime' filters.
2009 48hrs of Tristate Official Info
by paisan on Mon Nov 17 17:20:09 PST 2008
That's right folks, it's that time of the year again, when we all break out of the winter blues of no car shows, no auto-x, no road racing, no drag strips and head out on the open highway for a good cause. This is the 8th Annual running where a group of Subaru enthusiasts from all over the TriState area take a 3 day long trip covering about 48hrs of driving overall from Subaru Headquarters in NJ to the wintery snow of the Adirondacks. This year we are planning on about 900 miles of highways, backroads and no roads with dinners and partys every night. We also will be visiting SOA headquarters in Cherry Hill, NJ we will also be visiting Subaru Distributors Corp, the company that distributed most of our cars, and Vermont Sports Car where they build rally cars for SOA. Last year we raised over $13,000 for the American Cancer Society from pledges that the participants gathered and SOA's matching donations! Our goal this year is to raise over $8,000 for ACS. The trip will start with a dinner kickoff in Cherry Hill, NJ on Thurs Night Jan 15, 2008. We will continue on Friday morning with a visit to Subaru of America Headquarters for breakfast and then the drive will take our Subies up to SDC Headquarters for a catered lunch. Friday night we end in Burlington, VT. Saturday morning we have a tour of Vermont Sports Car planned, a treat for any Rally fans out there. Sat night after cruising the Northern Adirondacks we will end up at Dunham's Bay Resort in Lake George for our Raffle Banquet. Sunday will take us down through central NYS ending at our closing dinner meet in Scranton, PA All kinds of Subies are welcome on this trip. We've had XT6s, GLs, DLs, Legacies, Brats, you name it! Several companies also have provided us with door prizes for those participating! In past years we've had $1000s and $1000s worth of raffle prizes! The important info: What: Group drive to raise money for ACS and have a fun 900+ mile trip along the way. Where: Starts in Cherry Hill, NJ and continues throughout NJ and NY with stops in Burlington, VT the Adirondacks, Lake George and Scranton, PA When: Jan 15- Jan 18, 2009 More info: 48hrs of Tristate Highlights…. o Tour of VT Sports Car facility, where they build the Subaru Rally Cars (Awaiting Official Confirmation) o SPT will have the SEMA Forester XTI and Rescue Vehicles on hand at SOA for us to check out for ourselves o Biggest, Best Raffle Banquet o SDC will be giving away in excess of $4,000 in prizes this year! o Catered Breakfast at SOA and possibly a tour of the Subaru Museum of Cars o Catered Lunch at SDC
Re: M35 RWD and winter driving/tires [bobm35]

I have driven both a miata and a BMW 3 series during snowy winters commuting about 30 min each way in Connecticut. Both cars are reputed to be poor in the snow and ice. I never had a problem....but the key is to put four good snow tires on the car...not 2, not studded, not heavily worn and built to grip in the snow/ice with soft rubber. At the time I used Blizzaks. Of course you have to be careful not to spin the wheels and keep your speed even. Of course 4wd cars are better in the snow......however, I have also driven Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees to/from Vt and it's the only car that I lost control in on an interstate....in fact there were a few days with black ice that many jeeps spun out...I was far from alone. Nothing helps in black ice...and actually a 4wd car is more likely to spin out because you are over confident. In heavy snow, a Jeep is just wonderful.... My view is that 4 good new winter tires make any car manageable in the snow.
Re: rear differential in automatic Forester [xwesx]
by openeyes on Fri Oct 24 14:48:02 PDT 2008
Purchase date was Oct 01 so that five year (aka end of warranty regardless of mileage) was Oct 06. For the record, never towed anything, never climbed anything, just standard basic driving on paved roads... but the transmission still reached the brink of failure.

I too have been satisfied with my Forester, but needing transmission or differential work at such low mileages also has me wondering if I should trust buying another one if Subaru considers this normal wear(?). The Subaru Dealer is replacing my deteriorated transmission with a remanufactured one. Subaru headquarters negotiated to covering 1/2; while truly appreciated, means my cost is over $1870. How is it that a Forester properly maintained per their specs at one of their dealerships can need a automatic transmission replaced at 46,000 miles? Is it really just several of us with "bad luck"?
Tire Recommendations
by khallock on Fri Oct 24 06:58:16 PDT 2008
I need new tires on my 2005 LLBean Outback. The tire size is 225/55R17. It has the original tires on it now and they are completely bald. I am changing to winter tires in another 4 weeks and then in the spring will need to purchase new tires - any recommendations? Obviously something that will last and is safe. I always change over to snow tires in the winter. Thanks! Kristen
