Ford has had a lot of trouble with the 6-liter diesel, and the 2003 was the first. This engine is apparently running right at the top of its design specs. Any modification at all and you are asking for serious and expensive trouble. Problems include blowing turbo hoses off under load, turbo failure, injector failure, and blown head gaskets. To keep from blowing hoses, keep the boost under 25 lbs. To keep the turbo going, don't let it idle very long when engine is cold. This puts unburned fuel into the variable pitch of the turbo and eventually it won't work. Ford calls this "wet stacking". Any increase in compression and you are asking for blown head gaskets.

If I were Mullaly, I'd have told the senate where to stick their corporate jet comment as well. You act as if the CEO does nothing to earn that salary - unlike the union, there is no leverage they hold over the stockholders head to get that salary, the market pays for guys with their talents and skills, just like a football player. It seems extreme to us, but you'd take it if you could get it, you know you would.

Exactly, the Union is designed to manipulate the market and set wages artificially higher than the market will normally allow. Good for the worker, right up to the day when there is no longer a job for you because the industry has gone bust.

I think you're right, andre - but check out how well the Tundra does on the proving ground.... http://www.fordvehicles.com/2009f150/?page=/durability/ Admittedly, it's a Ford site, but the evidence is pretty irrefutable, the camera doesn't lie. The Japanese just don't quite have the truck thing down yet.

Both Nissan and Toyota have failed at full sized pickups. Toyota's Tundra (I owned an 05) was a great "little" truck, but never quite measured up in size or grunt. Until now, when they finally came out with the Bulldog, at exactly the wrong time. Nissan is giving up on the Titan, which has been trouble prone since inception. Not that it's a bad truck, it's not been up to Nissan dependability standards, or Fords, GM's or Chrysler's either.

I see nothing wrong with that - perhaps ironic, but I'll sell the Middle East cars all day long if they want them. They've always been fond of Suburbans there.
