EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

If the Big Three aren't yet concerned with this vehicle, they will be.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

For a large, three-row sport-utility, the GL550 is a standout performer: acceleration and handling are better than anything this size should have.

Comfort

RATING

The GL is comfortable in every way possible from ride comfort to seating accommodations.

Function

RATING

The GL offers more function than many of its natural competitors, however, the trade off is that a buyer new to Mercedes-Benz might need to take some time to learn how to operate all its controls.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

From a "full-sized SUV" standpoint, the luxurious and highly engineered GL represents a truly unique (and in some ways superior) option to the domestics of the same size.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Luxurious There really isn't an entry-level GL at this point. The $55K price includes things for which you'd pay extra (if you could even get them) on a domestic SUV of this size.

Comfortable For up to seven passengers, the GL is a quiet, smooth, leather-lined refuge from other full-sized SUVs.

Image Enhancer There's an image-enhancing element to owning a GL.

Towing Capable 5,300 pounds is a very good maximum tow rating considering this is not a ladder-framed truck.

Off-Road Ready The optional off-road package adds a planetary gearset and lockable differentials for true low-range four-wheel drive.
