2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX 4dr Sedan (4.6L 8cyl 4A)

Review

Put the vehicle in service on January 1, 2002. Have just about 80,000 miles on it at this point. Of course have mounted new tires, replaced brake pads, replaced two windshields, tune up and normal maintenance. Ford replaced one sensor without charge. Nothing has broken. The vehicle is problem free. The car is no drag racer but for its size and weight its mid range acceleration is impressive. Handling, including braking, is very competent for a car this size. Even with the older steering (it is not rack and pinion) the feed back/control are fine. We get a lot of bad weather, i.e. snow, but the traction control and ABS helps. Not as good as AWD or front wheel drive but not bad for rear wheel drive.

Favorite Features

Handling, mid range performance, braking. Temperature control is easy to use and effective. Like the understated trim and color scheme. Interior comfort is OK. Full size spare is important to me as is the large truck space. Very competent vehicle.

Suggested Improvements

Try to increase driver side leg room. It seems to me that the seat doesn't move back as far as in an older Crown Vic I had. Narrow front of console a bit to increase open width between driver side door and console. Twenty more horsepower would be nice.

Review

I recently found the perfect Crown Vic LX Sport after a long search. Monochromatic red with all the options. Tan leather interior. This is a great car with many nice features. Seems 2002 had everything going right for this vehicle. My other vehicle is a 1993 Mercury Cougar XR7 with 302 V8.

Favorite Features

Steering wheel controls for fan, audio, cruise control, etc. Express down driver window capability. Autodimming rear view mirror and directional indicator.

Suggested Improvements

While the premium audio sounds okay, I would like to see Alpine, Bose, or JBL outfit this car right out of the factory. Longer rails on the power seats would be helpful. Better designed front seats - they're uncomfortable for distance. Tachometer would be nice too.

front seats need a longer track, I'm only 5'9 and I'm crowded. I would be nice to move backward a few more inches.

Review

Until the price gouging on Mercury Marauders subsides, the Crown Victoria LX Sport is a worthwhile alternative. Although in a side-by-side test drive, I could really notice the Marauder's extra horsepower, better sound and larger tires, it wasn't $10,000 better than the LX Sport (including incentives). Both the Marauder and the LX Sport are VASTLY superior to their progenitors (Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria, respectively). Both are much quicker and handle significantly better. The LX Sport is as close to a Police Interceptor as a the average civilian can buy.

Favorite Features

The combination of HANDLING SUSPENSION and 17" WHEELS almost matches the Marauder in back-road prowess. DUAL EXHAUST (extra 10-15 horsepower). Monochromatic exterior trim. Five passenger/floor shift interior. 3.23 axle ratio.

Suggested Improvements

BADGES! We need some stinkin' BADGES that say "SPORT" (or better yet "Galaxie 500"). Traction-Lok differential. Tachometer. Chrome exhaust tips and a removable intake air silencer. 16 more valves. Finally, why not an SVT edition?

Review

This car is fun and functional. It carries adults in the rear seat without them being cramped. It accelerates to highway speeds (65 MPH) on the shortest of on-ramps. The trunk can hold more than your wife could ever pack! I can't understand why people would buy a cramped little Honda when you can get this for about the same price. This car has zero defects and the fit and finish is perfect. And I do get 25 MPG on the highway and 21 MPG around town with this rear-wheel drive V-8!

Favorite Features

My favorite features are the V-8, roomy interior, and comfortable seats. It's hard to limit my favorites as almost everything about this car hits the mark.

Suggested Improvements

I would improve the standard radio to a premium sound with CD player. I would design a better wheel cover as the honeycomb wheel covers are hard to clean.

This is the first Ford auto I've owned. Thus far no problems of a major concern. Service has been acceptable if your willing to wait long periods. Car is very comfortable to drive long distances with. Wife says it's too big!

Review

I guess I'm a little bit younger than the average Crown Vic owner, but I love them! This is my 4th one. All of my Crown Vic's have had excellent reliability and are still going strong. I have sold my old ones to friends and the 91 has 250K, the 92 has 198K, the 95 has 154K all on the original unrebuilt drivetrains.... Need I say more?? The comfort on the highway is unsurpassed. I would recommend this car to anyone. After all, this basic design (V8, auto, rear wheel drive, full body on frame) dates back to the dawn of automobiles and Ford has certainly exterminated the bugs out of this design. :)

Favorite Features

Stealthy SPEED! I have almost as much power as a Mustang GT, but "blend in" better. What would a cop pull over?? A bright red Mustang convertible or a plain jane Crown Vic??

Suggested Improvements

A manual trans Sport model would be really cool!! Redesign front door panels to let your knees have a teeeeny bit more room. Redesign defroster duct to allow the installation of a factory AM/FM/CD/Cass radio. The current design won't allow this.

Review

These cars are a raging bargain! For the price of a well-equipped Camry you can have the smoothness and power of a V8 engine and room for six. This is my sixth Crown Vic or Grand Marquis and I am skewing the averages for age of ownership, since I owned my first one at age 31 (I'm now 44). Just try finding a comparable V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive sedan for under $40k. If you rule out the Crown Vic's uppity cousin, the Lincoln Town Car, the pool of contenders is left largely to the German and Japanese luxury marques--Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Infiniti and Lexus. And none of those will accommodate six passengers.

Favorite Features

The leather interior is tastefully restrained. The equipment offered represents true luxury with extravagance. It has everything I really want without a lot of equipment I don't need, which helps keep the price/value ratio in the sweet spot.

Suggested Improvements

I would like to see steering-wheel radio controls on all models. The flat instrument panel allows for great legroom but makes for a long reach. Armrests with storage compartments would be a nice touch as well.
